Brecon Youth Soccer Visit

Saline Edges Brecon Town FC 3-2 in First Saline-Brecon Youth Soccer Challenge

The first Saline-Brecon Youth Soccer Challenge match was played on Henne Field in Saline on Wednesday, July 9, 2003. The Saline Hornets edged the Welsh boys 3-2 before a crowd of over 500 Saline citizens who gathered to witness the match. The players were individually introduced and Mayor Gretchen Driskell tossed the coin to begin the game. The first half was all Saline, with Saline Captain Cam Cameron scoring 2 of Saline's 3 goals, the last coming on a penalty kick that proved to be the winning difference. Down 3-0, the Brecon boys began the second half with a determination that never subsided. Danno Field scored the first Brecon goal and the Brecon narrowed the margin to one with a goal by Gavin Williams. The Saline Hornets withstood a furious finish by Brecon, however, and claimed the one goal victory. The large crowd stood as one to cheer the hard play and good sportsmanship of both teams when the final whistle sounded.

The presentation of the traveling Saline-Brecon Youth Soccer Cup was made by Judge Donald and Mrs. Marjorie Shelton to the Saline Hornets. The players and coaches for both squads were presented with commemorative medals by Saline-Brecon Guild President Linda Duvall and Mrs. Shelton. Brecon Coach Kim Bowley vowed that Brecon boys would have a friendly go at the cup again in a future exchange.
