John Culver

(1817-1852)

John Culver was the 6th child of Phineas and Thankful Sawyer Culver. He was born on November 30, 1817 in Williamson (Wayne County), New York. He married Lucinda Shoemaker on February 16, 1843 in Charleston Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. They had 5 sons: Edgar, Mortimer, George H., John S., and Walter. John, a blacksmith by trade, died suddenly in 1852 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan at the age of 35. Lucinda lived until 1908.

Lucinda Shoemaker Culver was born in Seneca County, New York on March 13, 1827. She was a "noted seamstress and tailoress and did much fancy work", according to her obituary. John's premature death in 1852 left Lucinda alone to care for 5 young boys.
