The theme of this year’s gathering is

CELEBRATING OUR FARMING HERITAGE

Our common ancestor, Phineas Culver moved from New York to Michigan with his son, Jesse, and their families in 1835.

They were farmers and bought property near Mooreville in Washtenaw County. Phineas bought 160 acres and son Jesse had an adjoining 80 acres.

In 1850, the government collected agricultural data as part of the U.S. Census. Here is what Marjorie found out about our relatives:

By 1850, Phineas'  had 100 acres of land valued at $2500, farming machinery worth $150, livestock valued at $341, including 2 horses, 4 milk cows, 13 other cattle, 20 sheep, and 5 pigs.

He raised wheat, Indian corn, and oats, and produced over 220 bushels of grain that year. Jesse's 60 acres were valued at $400, with $25 of farm machinery.

He had no horses but had 2 working oxen, 2 milk cows, 2 other cattle, 39 sheep and 4 pigs. He produced over 240 bushels of wheat, corn and oats that year.
